Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe the relationship between sleep duration and health risk behaviors among Korean adolescents aged 12 to 18 years.

Methods: Analyses are based on data from the 2012 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. The survey used a cross-sectional, national and representative sample consisting of 63,688 students (grades 7-12). Logistic regression analysis was conducted to test the association between sleep duration and health risk behaviors while controlling for demographic characteristics and feeling of depression.

Results: Adolescents who reported sleeping ¡Â 5 hours and 7-<8 hours had a significantly higher risk for current smoking compared to those with a total sleep time ¡Ã8 hours. The lesser sleep duration students had, the more current smoking, soda and fast food consumption they had.

Conclusion: Self-reported sleep duration may be a useful screening question for health risk behaviors among middle and high school students.
